August 2003 Improv Training in Chicago Saliha Bava joined Kim McGaw, of the Invisible Bus, to accompany a group of teens to Chicago for Improv Training in July. Saliha is part of an HGI team which has been training in Improv with Kim this past year. The one-week trip to Chicago included daily training at Second City, attending performances, a Chicago Cubs baseball game, sightseeing and shopping. Saliha and Kim have created an Improv group for premarital couples which you can learn more about at . International Summer Institute Conversation, Language and Possibilities: A Postmodern Approach to Therapy, Consultation, Training and Research Oaxaca, 2003 by Sylvia London, M.A. This year we had a great gathering in Oaxaca City, Mexico to explore and experience Postmodern ideas and practices. Every year since 1997, the International Summer Institute, has been in some place in Mexico. This year we chose Oaxaca city, a place known for it's great atmosphere, a mixture of pre-Hispanic, colonial and contemporary culture living through it's incredible markets full of art and artisans. We began on Sunday July 6 with a welcoming cocktail and cultural event, host by the Cruz Family.. They invited local weavers, who talked about the tradition of weaving and the relationship the artisan has to yarn, colors and designs. On Monday morning the seminar began introducing all of it's participants who came from different countries, including: Sweden, Portugal, Canada, Argentina ,USA and Mexico and the faculty and host team that included: Harlene Anderson, Elena Fernandez, Sylvia London, Irma Rodriguez, Margarita Tarragona and our resident artist Sara London. Once we explored everybody's agendas and interests, the seminar was built upon the creation of small group discussions where the agendas were addressed. Questions lead to more questions and to the creation of rich and exciting formal and informal spaces for conversations and reflections. On Tuesday and Thursday we had live interviews, where the participants experienced the application of postmodern ideas and it's philosophical stance to clinical practice, and were invited to share their ideas, questions and opinions. Wednesday is our field trip day and the outing was to Monte Alban, Zapotecan ruins in the outskirts of Oaxaca City. For our closing event we visited the Convento de Santo Domingo, a museum housed in a beautiful monastery. The combination of these wonderful historical surroundings and the relationships and conversations developed along the week, gave us an opportunity to experience ourselves as life long learners and foster new relationships and international projects. At the end of the ISI a small group visited the town of Yalalag in the mountains of Oaxaca, where we were able to witness and participate in the community transformation programs Armonia is sponsoring in that secluded town. The International Summer Institute will continue it's tradition of exploring Mexican towns, next year the ISI 2004 will take place in June in Playa del Carmen, in the Mayan Riviera close to Cancún. Don't miss it!!!! Registration Limited: Training Fest The Training Fest, a collection of 10 workshops offered by the HGI community, will be held at our central office at 3316 Mt. Vernon.
